It is time for the last post, for conclusion our accomplishment before the assessment, it is time for saying “good bye”

My reflection about blogging I gave in earlier post and comment.

To conclude in short, the assignment was really interesting experience for me. It gave me the opportunity at least to touch the blogging - the subject which I have never met before and which probably I would never take up without the assignment and DBE lecture.
I am not able now to decide “whether and how” I will develop or make use of this experience in the future, but I have the higher “blogging awareness” now, what means bigger possibilities for me.

Thanks a lot for all of you.

Skype announces free calls to fixed network in France

Skype, announced next week that all French-based Skype users with a broadband internet connection can make unlimited SkypeOut calls to landlines in France for free. This offer is valid in France from September 7 to December 31 2006. Previously, French-based Skype users were required to pay for all SkypeOut calls from their PCs to traditional landlines.
Skype anticipates that free calling to all landlines in France will expand Skype’s increasing penetration into the French market. “At Skype, we remain faithful to our desire to innovate and revolutionize the world of communications” said Jerome Archambeaud, French Market Development Manager for Skype. ” French consumers will have the opportunity to make free, unlimited calls to landline phones across the entire French population – that’s a total of 60 million people. All you need is broadband connection and a Skype account. “
After the huge success of a similar initiative for Skype users based in North America in May this year, France is the first European country where Skype has launched free internet calling.

Next steps in Polish (internet) market development

Next real step resulting from telecommunication market liberalization have happened.

Netia and TP signed agreement on wholesale broadband (bitstream)
Following the footsteps of the smaller telecom operator GTS Energis, Netia has signed an agreement with Telekomunikacja Polska to provide internet services for the latter's clients. Thanks to the agreement Netia acquired the rights to use TP's digital subscriber lines.
The telecommunication and IT systems of the two companies will be merged, enabling Netia to take over TP's internet traffic without the need for heavy spending on its own infrastructure. Some technical preparations for co-operation were made by Netia a few weeks ago, following the preliminary agreement.
Yet, Netia intends to launch its services, which will include VoIP, by the end of the year; it will target the mass market of cheap services. For the right to use subscriber lines, there is a 51% discount from TP’s retail regular price for internet connections (or 41% from promotional price). The difference between retail and wholesale prices must be enough for Netia to cover all costs.

Exatel launching Wimax
On the other hands new possibility of internet acces are really implemented. Exatel, owned by the Polish Power Grid Company (PSE), will launch the WiMAX (wireless internet) service in Warsaw and Cracow. The launching will enable Exatel to test the consumers' interest in the new service. WiMAX services will be subsequently introduced in 19 Polish cities by the end of June 2007. Exatel will invest PLN 80 million in the project. The network will ultimately cover 37 cities.

I thing the real competition just has begin.

Less than three weeks left - Prof. Gatarski message and my opinion about assignment

Today I took a look at the situation. According to my notes there are 28 registered blogs, of which many are just one post. On the other hand, some of you are doing just fine.I do not know how many students are in the class, but more than the registered blogs I guess. Most likely those who have not yet created a blog will not make an acceptable assignment.Neither will those of you who have made only one or two posts...

Please feel to publish what you think about the assignment. Either as posts in your blogs, or by commenting others thoughts on this subject (but I might miss reading such comment).

And I hope you bear with me as I grade your efforts. Quite a complicated task...but you will help. More on that later on.

These kind of assignment means interesting experience also for me. It allow me to touch the subject which probably would remain unrecognized.

At first – when the assignment was given - I did not know what is a blog. But it have been obvious that the task have been unique, unconventional. Undoubtedly, despite learning a lot of, I am still beginner in blogging. But with these experience blogging looks much better for me now than at the begin - and it seems to be more interesting and reasonable with each next step.

My Blog , … well , at first I had optimistically assumed at least weekly frequency for posting. In fact blogging require regularity, consistency and a bit passion (what is not necessary in traditional assignment). It is of course time consuming – especially leaner beginners.

I think – despite luck of “spectacular activity” in my blog – the main crucial thinks: my awareness of importance and roles remain durable as the result of this exercise.

The last matter – I have impression, that thanks to our student blogs monitoring, I have learnt more about the (recognized) authors than from direct relation until now.

I am sure – if we meet in some next classes you will surprise us favourably again.

Future in Internet

The analysts of the advisory company Audytel have published the report on the Polish telecom market. They noticed that revenues from traditional telecom services gradually decrease as users are increasingly eager to use other forms of communication. Mobiles, internet telephony and data transmission become highly popular not only among Polish companies but also among individual users. The analysts estimate that in 2006 the value of the Polish telecom market will reach PLN 37 billion, which means that it will grow by 5 percent, mainly due to development of mobile services.

Emil Konarzewski, one of the heads of Audytel, claims that the number of connections serviced by traditional telecom companies decreases and their revenues fall as prices of connections fall due to growing competition on the market. Some operators save their revenues by increasing subscription fees and offering higher number of free minutes, but still their revenues are to decrease.
Mobile segment is the fastest developing on the telecom market. It is expected that in 2007 the saturation of the market will reach 100 percent. Afterwards the pace of development will fall as all potential users will already have mobiles. Data transmission services are expected to be the fastest developing segment in forthcoming years. It will grow by 17-35 percent annually.

Athorities try to support telecom customers

In majority of businesses the offer, solution and technology development is powered usually by market and competition. In some trades – historically monopolized - there are some official regulation in order to level off the competition chance. This kind of regulation are applied on telecommunication market in Poland and majority of countries in the World.
Generally, the regulation idea means that operator(s) (each or the dominated one) is obliged to make infrastructure (or even services offer) available to others. The fee for use is set administratively and is not always profitable.
In Poland, official regulations given by previous regulation authorities, URTiP, were rather soft and long-term oriented - until today. Actually, newly created electronic media authorities UKE can contribute to fast change in rules, which can be effective in offer and market revival.
If market players (dominated operator) implement ordered regulation, it will brings new development opportunity for minor operators and financial benefits for customers (within current services offer).

But paradoxically this immediate benefits for market participant is not as unambiguous for long-term market development, e.g. network development investments and new services accessibility. Especially places/regions where technical infrastructure is weak and undeveloped can suffer in future as a result of investments delimitation.

Why? The minor operators would not afford necessary investments for proper development (despite of predicted increase in market share and profit). On the other hand considerably decreased profitability of dominated operator (and all the trade) significantly decrease the investments possibility. Also investments reasonableness have big importance for business decisions - the question is: “is it good deal for company to produce and “obligatory-sell” new-built infrastructure (or new-created services) for competitors without any profit?”
It is possible that none of the companies will be really interested in investments and significant development. The regulation can appear too strict.

In my opinion this kind of official regulation is reasonable and future-oriented when concern deeply-developed market/services (e.g. fixed voice, roaming) – then, it makes saturated, monopolized market free and open for competitors. When it concern new services or highly undeveloped market (e.g. broadband ADSL) – regulation can probably stop (or delimit) natural development.
So compromise, common sense and taking into account all market participants seem to be crucial for balanced telecommunication market development.

I’ve just decided to choose the topic for my blog.
I’m going to take up the innovation in telecommunications solution and market development.

This is connected with people’s hopes for better (bright) future – freedom, lifestyle, spending.
For telecoms future – especially traditional – fast changes can bring opportunities as well as big treats.

As the objective of the assignment is to explore tools for Digital Business Enhancements I think the chosen subject is appropriate for looking at related digital technique.
